Edward Wilson Spence 1965 - 1991

Eddie was the youngest child of David and Beth Spence, but being the youngest was never an obstacle to him. I suppose the proper word to describe him as a child would be boisterous, as he was more than a handful for his older brother and sister when they used to play on their Granda Reid's plantain at Whitepark on the Ballycorr road. After Uncle Sam and Aunt Ruby moved to Larne to live, I didn't see much of Eddie, David or Maree but I remember talking to Eddie just before he joined the RUC and then again shortly after.

He first joined the police reserves on 29th December 1986 and was stationed in Larne until June 1988. After this he joined the regular Police Force and passed out at Garnerville R.U.C. Training Centre on 5th August 1988. He was then stationed at Donegall Pass Police Station and it was while he was there, he was so tragically murdered by the enemies of Ulster.

Eddie was part of a foot patrol in the Lower Crescent area of Belfast. Just after midnight on 25th May 1991, a gunman appeared out of the shadows and before anyone could respond, he fired, hitting Eddie. Two days later at 01.30 hrs on 27th May, Eddie died in the intensive care unit of Belfast City Hospital. He was only 26 years old and left behind two lovely children, Lyndsey Maree and Edward. the sad thing is that Eddie should have finished his shift at 11pm that night but had been asked to stay on to provide extra cover.
